Venetian plaster on walls

Venetian plaster is a lime-based finish applied in thin layers and burnished back, producing depth and a soft sheen that paint cannot reproduce. It is a surface finish rather than a coating, and it is worked by hand, so no two walls are identical.

Substrate preparation governs the result. Walls are made flat and sound first, because burnishing highlights undulations rather than concealing them. Corners, junctions and any movement joints are considered before application, since the finish is continuous and cannot be cut in later.

Application is layered: a base coat, then successive thin coats compressed with a trowel, with the final passes burnished to raise the sheen. The number of coats and how hard the surface is polished determines whether the wall reads as matt and stone-like or closer to polished marble.

Because it is lime-based, the finish is breathable, and it is generally more forgiving of the small movements a building makes than a rigid coating would be. In areas exposed to water or handling it is sealed appropriately for that use.

How many walls in a room should be plastered?

Usually one, occasionally two where they read as a single plane. The effect depends on contrast with plainer surfaces, so treating every wall generally reduces the impact rather than multiplying it, and it makes the room feel smaller than it is.

Can Venetian plaster be painted over later?

It can, and it is a decision worth understanding before committing, because painting over it loses the depth and movement that the material was chosen for. The surface is prepared first rather than painted directly, particularly where it has been waxed or heavily burnished.

Does the finish change over time?

Lime-based finishes continue to carbonate and typically harden as they age. Colour is stable where pigment runs through the material, though like any surface it will show wear in areas of contact, and a waxed finish can be refreshed to restore the sheen.
