Venetian Plaster

Where these finishes suit a room, and where they do not

Lime-based decorative plasters do their best work on a plane the room already looks at: a chimney breast, the wall behind a bed or a bath, a stairwell, or a reception wall in a commercial interior. Applied to every wall in a room they lose their effect, because the contrast with a plain surface is part of what makes them read as a feature.

They are less suited to some places than the material is often sold for. Surfaces that get constant physical contact, unheated or persistently damp spaces, and areas of direct and prolonged water contact all need either a different specification or a sealing regime chosen for that exposure. Where a wall is not right for the material, it is better to say so at survey than to seal around the problem.

The substrate carries more of the outcome than the product does. These finishes are only a few millimetres thick, so flatness, soundness and how junctions are detailed determine the result far more than which branded system is used.

All of it is agreed from samples viewed in the room, under its own light, at the times of day the space is used, because sheen and depth change considerably between a showroom board and a north-facing wall.

Common questions

Can Venetian plaster be applied over painted walls?

Usually, provided the existing paint is sound and well bonded and the wall is flat. Loose, flaking or heavily textured coatings are removed first, because the finish is thin and takes the shape and the soundness of whatever is beneath it.

Is Venetian plaster suitable for a whole room?

It can be, but it is often less effective than people expect. Much of the appeal comes from contrast with plainer surfaces, and applying it to every wall removes that contrast. On a single considered plane it reads as a feature; everywhere at once it reads as a wall covering.

What happens where a plastered wall meets a different surface?

That junction is detailed before application rather than dealt with afterwards. Changes of substrate and existing movement joints will move independently, and a continuous finish taken straight across them will crack along that line, so they are carried through the finish instead.
