Choosing between a fit, a refurbishment and a renovation

The three words get used interchangeably and they describe quite different jobs. A fit installs a new bathroom into a prepared room. A refurbishment keeps the existing layout and renews the surfaces and fittings on it. A renovation changes the layout itself, which means moving services and dealing with everything that follows.

The distinction matters because it sets cost and disruption before anything else is decided. Keeping drainage where it is avoids the most invasive stage of the work. Moving it means lifting floors, forming new falls and, in most cases, re-planning ventilation and lighting at the same time.

Across all three, the same preparation decides whether the result lasts: a sound and level substrate, wet zones tanked before tiling, junctions and movement joints formed rather than filled, and ventilation sized for the room the space is becoming rather than the one it was.

Common questions

How disruptive is a bathroom project day to day?

The noisiest stages are strip-out and any chasing or cutting, which are short. Water is isolated only during first and second fix rather than throughout. Where a property has one bathroom we plan the sequence around that instead of leaving the room stripped between stages.

Can you work to a fixed price?

Yes, following a structural site survey. A fixed price given without one is a guess, because what is behind the surfaces determines a large part of the work. The quotation itemises materials and labour separately so the scope being fixed is explicit.

Do you handle plumbing and electrics as well as tiling?

Yes. Trades are managed internally rather than each stage being subcontracted separately, so the same team is responsible from strip-out to handover and the handovers between stages are not passed between contractors.
