Microcement walls

Microcement on walls gives a continuous, groutless surface with a hand-worked texture. It is used where tiling would introduce grout lines that interrupt the surface, and it can be taken across corners and into reveals without a trim.

On walls the preparation is different from floors. Existing tiles can often be worked over if they are firmly bonded, using a high-adhesion primer and reinforcing mesh, which avoids the mess and making-good of removing them. Plasterboard needs to be sound and joints properly treated.

Texture is a specification decision, not an accident of application. The number of finishing coats and how they are trowelled determines whether the wall reads as almost flat and modern or noticeably hand-worked, so it is agreed with samples before work starts.

In shower areas and splash zones the sealing regime does the work. Microcement is applied over a properly tanked substrate in wet zones, then sealed, and the sealer is chosen for water and cleaning-product exposure rather than appearance alone.

Common questions

Can microcement be applied over plasterboard?

Yes, provided the board is sound, securely fixed and the joints are properly treated. Movement at a poorly fixed board or an untreated joint will telegraph through a thin continuous finish, so the boarding is checked before priming rather than after the first coat.

How is the texture controlled?

Can microcement be used behind a hob or a sink?

Behind a sink, yes, with a sealer suited to water and cleaning products. Directly behind a hob it depends on the heat exposure and the clearances involved, and in many kitchens a heat-resistant panel in that specific zone alongside microcement elsewhere is the more sensible specification.
