What gypsum art work involves

Gypsum is cast rather than carved. A pattern is made first, a mould is taken from it, and pieces are then cast from that mould in plaster. That sequence is what makes the material suited to decorative interior work: once a mould exists, a motif can be repeated exactly along a run, or a single piece can be cast one-off for a specific wall.

Because pieces are cast off-site and fixed afterwards, most of the work happens away from the house. Fixing is the disruptive part, and it is short. Joints between cast sections are filled and made good on site so a run reads as continuous rather than as separate panels.

Gypsum is an interior material. It is not suited to exterior use or to unheated, damp spaces, and in bathrooms it needs to sit outside the wet zone unless it is sealed for the purpose. Where a piece will be handled or knocked, the fixing detail matters more than the casting.

Architectural features

Cornices, mouldings, ceiling roses, corbels and panel mouldings — the structural-looking detail that defines a room’s proportions. In period properties this is usually about matching what already exists, which means taking a mould from an original section so new work is indistinguishable from old.

Baroque frames

Ornate cast frames for mirrors, panels and wall openings, in the heavily modelled style the name suggests. Frames are cast in sections for anything beyond a modest size, then joined and made good in place, because a single large casting is both fragile and awkward to fix.

Bespoke gypsum artwork

One-off pieces made to a specific brief rather than drawn from an existing mould. This starts with the pattern: the design is modelled first, a mould taken from it, then the final piece cast. It is the most involved route, and it is the only one that produces something not repeatable elsewhere.

Decorative feathers

Cast feather motifs used as wall detail, singly or arranged as a composition. The appeal is the contrast between a soft, organic form and the flat plane it sits on, and the effect depends heavily on lighting — raking light across the wall is what gives the relief its depth.

Decorative sculptures

Free-standing and wall-mounted sculptural pieces cast in plaster. Wall-mounted work needs its fixing planned against the wall construction: a heavy piece on plasterboard requires noggins or a spreader behind it, decided before the wall is finished rather than after.

Luxury wall installations

Full-wall compositions built up from cast elements, where the wall itself becomes the feature rather than carrying one. These are set out and dry-laid before fixing, because spacing and alignment across a whole elevation are difficult to correct once pieces are bonded.

Common questions

How are cast gypsum pieces fixed to a wall?

With adhesive appropriate to the substrate, and with mechanical support where the weight requires it. A heavy piece on plasterboard needs noggins or a spreader behind it, which is decided before the wall is closed rather than after, so fixing is planned alongside the design.

Can a damaged cast piece be repaired?

Yes. Plaster is repairable by hand, and where a mould for the piece exists a damaged section can be recast rather than the whole element replaced. Repairs are made good and finished into the surrounding surface.

Can existing period cornice or mouldings be matched?

Usually, by taking a mould from a sound original section and casting new work from it. That is the reliable way to match a profile exactly, and it is why an intact length of the original is worth preserving even when the rest has been damaged.
